چکیده

The conjugacy problem and the inverse conjugacy problem of a finitely generated group are defined, from a language theoretic point of view, as sets of pairs of words. An automaton might be obliged to read the two input words synchronously, or could have the option to read asynchronously. Hence each class of languages gives rise to four classes of groups; groups whose (inverse) conjugacy problem is an (a)synchronous language in the given class. For regular languages all these classes are identical with the class of finite groups. We show that the finitely generated groups with asynchronously context-free inverse conjugacy problem are precisely the virtually free groups. Moreover, the other three classes arising from context-free languages are shown all to coincide with the class of virtually cyclic groups, which is precisely the class of groups with synchronously one-counter (inverse) conjugacy problem. It is also proved that, for a δ-hyperbolic group and any λ ≥ 1, ǫ ≥ 0, the intersection of the inverse conjugacy problem with the set of pairs of (λ, ǫ)-quasigeodesics is context-free. Finally we show that the conjugacy problem of a virtually free group is an asynchronously indexed language.

Conjugacy Classes of Solutions to Equations and Inequations over Hyperbolic Groups

We study conjugacy classes of solutions to systems of equations and inequations over torsion-free hyperbolic groups, and describe an algorithm to recognize whether or not there are finitely many conjugacy classes of solutions to such a system. The class of immutable subgroups of hyperbolic groups is introduced, which is fundamental to the study of equations in this context. We apply our results...

The isomorphism problem for residually torsion-free nilpotent groups

Both the conjugacy and isomorphism problems for finitely generated nilpotent groups are recursively solvable. In some recent work, the first author, with a tiny modification of work in the second author’s thesis, proved that the conjugacy problem for finitely presented, residually torsion-free nilpotent groups is recursively unsolvable. Here we complete the algorithmic picture by proving that t...

The Conjugacy Problem in Amalgamated Products I: Regular Elements and Black Holes

We discuss the time complexity of the word and conjugacy problems for free products G = A ?C B of groups A and B with amalgamation over a subgroup C. We stratify the set of elements of G with respect to the complexity of the word and conjugacy problems and show that for the generic stratum the conjugacy search problem is decidable under some reasonable assumptions about groups A, B, C. Moreover...

The conjugacy problem in free solvable groups and wreath product of abelian groups is in TC$^0$

We show that the conjugacy problem in a wreath product A ≀B is uniformTC -Turing-reducible to the conjugacy problem in the factors A and B and the power problem in B. Moreover, if B is torsion free, the power problem for B can be replaced by the slightly weaker cyclic submonoid membership problem for B, which itself turns out to be uniform-TC-Turing-reducible to conjugacy problem in A ≀B if A i...

Decidability and Independence of Conjugacy Problems in Finitely Presented Monoids

There have been several attempts to extend the notion of conjugacy from groups to monoids. The aim of this paper is study the decidability and independence of conjugacy problems for three of these notions (which we will denote by ∼p, ∼o, and ∼c) in certain classes of finitely presented monoids. We will show that in the class of polycyclic monoids, p-conjugacy is “almost” transitive, ∼c is stric...
